GPT Researcher

by assafelovic · assafelovic/gpt-researcher

Autonomous research agent: give it a question, it plans searches, reads sources, and writes a cited report — callable from Claude via MCP.

GPT Researcher decomposes a research question into sub-queries, fetches web and document sources, and synthesizes a cited report. Its MCP server lets Claude offload deep research while staying in the chat.

~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json  · Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
{

    "gpt-researcher-mcp": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "gpt-researcher-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Open Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config. Restart after saving.

~/.cursor/mcp.json · .cursor/mcp.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "gpt-researcher-mcp": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [
        "gpt-researcher-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Cursor uses the same mcpServers schema as Claude Desktop. Project config wins over global.

      "command": "uvx",
      "args": [

    }
  }
}

Click the MCP Servers icon in the Cline sidebar, then "Edit Configuration".

~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json

      ]
    }
  }
}

Same shape as Claude Desktop. Restart Windsurf to pick up changes.

}

Continue uses an array of server objects rather than a map.

    }
  }
}

Add to context_servers. Zed hot-reloads on save.

claude mcp add gpt-researcher-mcp -- uvx gpt-researcher-mcp

One-liner. Verify with claude mcp list. Remove with claude mcp remove.

Use Cases

Real-world ways to use GPT Researcher

Run a deep research task from inside Claude

👤 Developers ⏱ ~15 min intermediate

When to use: Question needs 20+ sources and a written summary, not 3 web hits.

Flow
  1. Bridge
    Add GPT Researcher MCP.✓ Copied
    → Tool visible
  2. Commission
    Ask Claude to commission the research.✓ Copied
    → Researcher runs
  3. Receive
    Cited report comes back.✓ Copied
    → Ready to use

Outcome: Cited multi-source report in one prompt.

Cost & Limits

What this costs to run

API quota
Per LLM + search provider
Tokens per call
Heavy — long contexts
Monetary
Free OSS; LLM + search costs
Tip
Set max-iterations to cap runaway researchers

Security

Permissions, secrets, blast radius

Minimum scopes: search:read
Credential storage: API keys in env
Data egress: Configured providers
Never grant: Send proprietary data unless self-hosting

Troubleshooting

Common errors and fixes

Researcher loops on same sources

Lower iteration cap; tighten the question
